Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D for DUMMIES, by Julie Adair King is a pretty good guide to a pretty complicated camera. It has to start simply and proceed step-by-step through all the ramifications of auto and manual modes. When you add in having to explain colour spaces, exposure zones, compensation for this and that it takes a good logical mind to keep you interested and informed. The author does a fine job with full colour illustrations of both screens and illustrative shots.
The good thing about collecting older equipment is the accompany-ing literature gets very reasonable.
Search thrift stores, church sales and garage sales because books like this can show up for as little as $1.
