Canon Power Winder A

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

The Canon Power Winder A is the first of two winders made for all the “A” series Canon cameras. It takes four AA batteries. It can power 20 rolls of film through A-cameras. It is a brilliantly simple device because the A-cameras were designed with it in mind. The winder is triggered to advance the film by the camera. Once the film is finished a LED shines red to indicate it is time to rewind the film.

Since winders in general don’t rewind film, it has a pass-through rewind button you press and then you use the camera’s rewind crank to rewind the film.

There is a chrome hold-down recess for the camera’s motor drive metal cover. You line up the winder with the tripod socket on the camera and screw the two together.

You release the clip (there is a release on the end, under the on/off power switch)

Then you load four AA batteries into the “clip” and

insert the clip into the winder.

The winder is a joy to own. It is sculpted, trim and extremely functional.                NB: The later winder is the Power Winder A2.  It had a "C" (for continuous) rate of two frames a second (as long as the shutter speed/mirror cycle rate can physically be achieved). It also had a single fire mode where the film is wound when the shutter button is released (like the Winder A). The A2 also had a remote trigger connector.
