Kellogg’s Froot Loops Toucan Sam Camera

Submitted by Al

Toucan Sam is the cartoon mascot for Froot Loops breakfast cereal. The character has been featured in advertising since 1963. He exhibits the ability to smell Froot Loops from great distances and invariably locates a concealed bowl of the cereal while intoning, "Follow your nose! It always knows!", sometimes followed by "The flavor of fruit! Wherever it grows!"

This camera was generally given away in some promotion to encourage sales of Froot Loops Cereal. It was either in a box of cereal, or would be given either free or at a discount if you sent the manufacturer a quantity of cereal box tops.

I don’t remember how I got this camera, but I know I did not eat any Froot Loops to acquire it. It was probably thrown in with other cameras that I bought, or just given to me by well meaning friends or family. I usually record my acquisitions, so I dropped the ball on this one.

While researching this camera online, I came across several articles about it. The first item was a 2005 advertisement from Kellogg’s, indicating that the camera, without film, would be included inside a specially marked package of Kellogg’s products.

Then I found a sales listing showing that this camera was part of a Kellogg’s PICTURE THIS! 2005 Camera Promotion. The film was included this time, so I suspect that this was part of a paid promotion.

Lastly, I found a claim that these cameras contained a Kelltar glass f8 / 28mm lens from 1924, that were found in a Kellogg’s warehouse.

You can decide which story applies to this camera!
