Talking Tripods

If you keep collecting tripods, you have to start wondering, “Why?” Sure you can try to pass it off as every new tripod has some feature you really need. A heavy studio tripod isn’t much fun on a day hike, while a light tripod can be a serious disaster in tight spaces with hard floors.

All that aside there is an argument for the engineering demonstrated in different tripods. The different leg locks for example. Some are handier than others. Some snag where others wouldn’t have. Some locks slip seriously by the time you acquire them, years after being abused in many different hands.

But enough of all that, let’s look two completely different tripods that were acquired at the same time (and stripped the thrift store of its entire inventory).

There is a Susis 183 (right), made in Germany, that has legs that simply pull out and lock into place. The other is some nameless Japanese tripod that does everything well!

Later the plot thickens with an existing German tripod similar to the Susis 183 and another German tripod added three days later.

And then there is another tripod! An American tripod this time, similar to the second tripod already featured.
