The Minolta Hi-Matic AF

The Minolta Hi-Matic AF was the first of four consecutive cameras given to me by one friend. It came out in 1979 as the first Autofocus camera from Minolta. It was replaced with the Minolta AF2 in 1982.

For those who like to keep track of such things, it is the first AF I have collected. On the other hand I have three AF2’s. One was collected in 2009, one in 2019 and the last in 2021.

But I digress…

The Hi-Matic AF has a 38 mm f/2.8 Rokkor lens with four elements in three groups. Its filter size was 46 mm. The light sensor was within the filter area. You could set ASA from 25-400. You could lock the exposure/distance. It had a mechanical 10-second self-timer. If the flash was turned on the camera would use it automatically. Advance and rewind of the film was manual.

The camera could focus from 1 m to infinity in four steps (indicated by LED’s above the viewfinder). The camera would chose exposures from an 8th of a second at f/2.8 to 430 sec at f/17.

The Minolta AF came in a stitched, leather-look case
