The Ultrablitz Rocket Electronic Flash

The Ultrablitz Rocket is a very old electronic flash (around 1960). It has a pivoting accessory shoe bracket that allow the flash to be horizontally (two-ways up) and vertically orientated. It has an attached PC cable.

On the back it has a battery compartment. Below that is a calculator dial at the hub of the bracket. Hidden from view (behind the bracket) is a ready light. It is the ancient neon bulb style of ready light, and it didn’t light when the flash was powered up. The flash did fire though. It is not uncommon for ancient electronic flash to come to life partially. If it was necessary, and you had enough batteries on hand, you could keep trying to get the capacitor “formed” so the ready light would light. There is a power plug connection on one side of the flash.

Speaking of batteries, the Rocket uses two “C” batteries, not the ubiquitous AA batteries. Electronic flash this old are sometimes rechargeable. Even rarer, some old  electronic flash used “D” cells. But I have never met an electronic flash powered by “C” cells before!

The Rocket is a fairly heavy flash. It weighs 369 g (13 oz). It is 12 cm x 8.25 cm x 4.25 cm (4.75” x 3.25” x 1.675’”). Ultrablitz flash were made by Robert Bosch Elektonik in Germany. This model was imported into North America by Allied Impex Corporation.
